Home Renovation Savings Program

The Home Renovation Savings Program is Ontario's main home energy rebate, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas. Some upgrades, such as heat pumps and solar, earn rebates on their own; others, such as wall insulation and windows, need a home energy assessment and a bundle of two or more upgrades.

How the two paths work, what each upgrade pays, and the order to do things in so you don't miss the bundle rebates.

The two paths

Bundle path (assessment needed)

Book a home energy assessment first, do two or more eligible upgrades, then a post-upgrade assessment. Unlocks insulation, windows, air sealing and heat pump water heater rebates, plus $600 toward the assessments.

Direct path (no assessment)

Heat pumps, rooftop solar and batteries, attic insulation, smart thermostats and appliances earn rebates on their own.

Do it in this order

  1. Assess first. Book the EnerGuide evaluation before any bundle work starts, or those rebates are lost.
  2. Seal and insulate before sizing a heat pump; a tighter house needs a smaller one. See heat pump sizing.
  3. Get quotes for two or more bundle upgrades, and check eligible products.
  4. Finish with the post-upgrade assessment to release the bundle rebates.

Stack it

Home Renovation Savings can sit alongside Toronto HELP financing, the Durham Greener Homes rebate and the National Heat Pump Rebate, subject to each program's rules.

Common questions

How do Home Renovation Savings bundle rebates work?

Book a home energy assessment before any work, complete two or more eligible upgrades such as insulation, windows, air sealing or a heat pump water heater, then have a post-upgrade assessment. You also get a $600 rebate toward the assessments.

Which rebates don't need an assessment?

Cold-climate air source heat pumps (up to $7,500), ground source heat pumps (up to $12,000), rooftop solar and battery storage (up to $10,000), attic insulation ($1,250), smart thermostats ($100) and appliances (up to $200).

Can I combine Home Renovation Savings with other programs?

Often, yes, for example with Toronto HELP financing, the Durham Greener Homes rebate or the National Heat Pump Rebate. Each program has its own stacking rules.
