Ontario's Largest Competitive Energy Procurement: What It Means for Businesses

On August 28, 2024, Ontario launched its second long-term competitive energy procurement. The province called it the largest competitive energy procurement in Ontario’s history, aimed at securing reliable, affordable electricity for homes and businesses as demand climbs. Read the official announcement.

Why Ontario needs more power

Ontario’s electricity demand is rising fast. Population growth, new manufacturing, data centres, the electrification of industry and electric vehicles are all adding load. The procurement is designed to add new electricity generation and storage capacity, supporting economic growth and investment in clean energy.

2026 update: first results are in

  • In December 2024 the province raised the procurement target to up to 7,500 megawatts.

  • In April 2026 the first energy window results approved 14 renewable projects adding more than 1,300 megawatts of new supply, expected online before May 1, 2030.

  • The government reported that the contracts cost ratepayers 73% less than the former Feed-in-Tariff contracts.

  • Results for the capacity window were expected in summer 2026.

What it means for building owners and businesses

New supply takes years to come online, so the province is also paying buildings to use less power at peak times and to cut waste. Programs such as Save on Energy’s Peak Performance Program, the Retrofit Program and Existing Building Commissioning reward commercial buildings that can control and verify their energy use. See every current incentive on our Ontario commercial energy incentive programs page.
